Orick Getaway - Coastal Farmhouse in Redwood National Park

3 Bedroom(s) | 1.5 Bathroom(s) | Sleeps 6

Welcome to The Orick Getaway. If you arrive before dark, hop on the bikes and take the seven minute ride (20 on foot) along the road, which travels through cattle and horse pasture, to the Pacific Ocean. Scramble over the driftwood and walk along an untamed beach between the surf and the bluffs, among few other people.

Return along the levee road and you might spot a seal or two lounging on the sandbar or fishing Redwood Creek. A variety of birds can also be spotted here. Take in the hills of alder and redwood, which encompass this valley. While you might lose sight of the ocean at a distance, the sound of the waves often make their way to the porch and open windows of the Getaway in the evening.

A short drive south along the highway to the Kutcher Visitors Center offers easier beach access. This area provides many options.

From the comfort of indoors, enjoy the quiet darkness and occasional fog which blankets the valley at night. Start the ping pong tournament in the garage or just take in a movie on one of two televisions (we have satellite and internet). The Getaway offers many modern amenities in a rural setting. But if it gets to be noon the next day, the sun is shining and you are still on your device, you might be missing something!

Be sure to plan the next day. Hiking on any of the countless trails among the Redwoods at Prairie Creek to the north or kayaking in the Humboldt lagoons to the south. Both just 15 minutes away. Just a little farther is the seaside town of Trinidad which offers shopping and dining. Patrick's Point, also in the area, offers more outdoor exploration. That's just your first full day. Keep going.

Pick a day to not go far, maybe not even get in the car. Walk or bike the two roads or the creek that stretch through this valley. Consider how the history of this area is tied to the land. Pop into the Palm Café right on the highway, for a great lunch, and take in the friendly atmosphere and the comfort of this area. The market and post office are right across the road. Return home and enjoy the afternoon views of the pasture from the porch or the chairs on the knoll.

Take a step back in time and another step away from the pace of the modern world and you will find yourself at the Getaway. We truly hope you enjoy your stay.

While enjoying this amazing landscape, please understand the possible conditions of a rural setting. Though every effort is made to eliminate unwanted visitors, the occasional insect and even less frequent mouse may wish to join the fun. In addition, well water and electricity, in a very rare instance of extreme weather, may be interrupted for the least amount of time possible.

Great getaway

Review by
Great getaway rental. We had 6 adults and had plenty of space to relax and spend time with each other. The house was furnished with everything you needed plus some. Cute decor and clean. Great wildlife to observe and ocean just a short walk away. You can hear the waves in the distance from the house. Location of house feels private and quiet. They provided a book with all the information for surrounding areas, tidbits, restaurants, shopping, etc. They were quick to respond to questions.

Manager Response:
The Orick Getaway is such a delightful home to choose when vacationing in our area. This is a lovely coastal country home, situated overlooking green pastures, and is a short drive to either the beach, Trinidad, or north to the Redwood National Parks. I am glad was a good fit for your family of 6, and that the home provided plenty of information for your stay. Thank you for booking with Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals and I hope we will be able to host you again.

Fantastic Girlfriend Retreat

Review by Brandy H.
Me and four girlfriends stayed at the farmhouse for two nights. The home is just as advertised. Lots of room to spread out, plenty of comfortable beds, exceptionally clean, plenty of linens and blankets available for use indoor and some for outdoors around the fire pit. There was a bundle of wood available for the fire pit, but we unfortunately ran out of time to use it. The beach just down the road is stunning and the proximity to Prairie Creek State Redwood Park was so convenient. There was lots of information available in the home on what to do and where to eat in the area that came in handy for planning our trip down the coast when we left. There were lots of games available and a bookshelf full of books to read. I particularly enjoyed the den/family room that had a desk, sofa, love seat and TV in it as I had to work remotely from my laptop during the nights, and I was able to work late without disturbing everyone. Only minor complaint is there was no laundry soap (container was empty) and one of us wanted to do a small load of laundry. Also, we couldn't find more than one extra garbage bag for our trash. I've experienced the garbage bag issue in other rental units too, so maybe it's something people like to run off with or they use too many? I would definitely stay in this home again if in the area.

Manager Response:
What a wonderful and thorough review of the Orick Getaway. This is one of our most charming homes in the Orick area, near the Redwoods. I am so happy to hear it was a good fit for your girlfriends retreat. We do not supply laundry detergent, but there should have been a couple extra trash bags in the bottom of each trash can, so that when the trash was taken to the main trash receptacle, a new bag would be waiting in the bottom of the empty can. I apologize for the oversite if there were none. I am pleased the home had adequate amenities for your stay and I hope you will return again for future stays. We would love to have you back. That fire pit will be waiting for you!

The home was very clean and comfortable and the surroundings were picturesque. We would definitely stay in this property when we visit the Northern California coast.

The Orick Getaway is one of my favorite homes. Amazing views and easy access to surrounding areas makes this home an idea place to stay at when enjoying the North Coast.

This place is fabulous

Review by James W.
This property is in close proximity to the Redwood parks, 101, and the Pacific, and is nestled in the perfect location to be quiet and private. My family of 5 watched cattle, deer, coyotes, quail, and geese all from the porch every day. The short jaunt to the beach is fantastic and not crowded at all. The property is comfortable, well maintained and well stocked. The management goes out of the way to make sure you enjoy your stay.

A Charming Surprise

Review by
The house was clean, the decor was charming, the rural setting was delightful and quiet, the ocean was nearby, and we were only a short drive from spectacular trails through the redwoods. We would love to return again.

Manager Response:
The Rainbow's End Country Home is definitely a charming surprise for many. Although in a very rural setting, it is just a short distance to the beach, to the highway, and to the Natiional and State Parks. There are many wonderful nearby trails, as well one of the largest Elk herds in Northern California. Despite appearances, Orick burl shops are spectacular inside, and the Palm Café has some of the best homemade pies in the County. Thank you for choosing the Rainbow's End and for booking with Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals. We hope to see you again.

A Wonderful Find!

Review by John H.
This is a wonderful home, warm, bright and inviting! The owners have created a space that is very friendly and welcoming, from the moment you walk in the door. Details seem very important to the owners and they have not missed anything! This home is a quick bike ride to the ocean, on a very quiet road. The most noise you will hear are the cows "mooing" across the road.

Clean and Convenient Location, but...

Review by
Pros: Great location for exploring the redwoods. Clean and well furnished. Cons: no dishwasher or drying rack, no disposal in sink, not well stocked or supplied for cooking your own meals...lacked basics like salt and pepper and oil. Stove top is very low powered gas...takes a long time to boil a pot of water. The yard is not children friendly...we had poor experiences with poison oak and the electric fence. It would have been noce to know about both of those in advance. TV is the size of a computer screen. There are not enough blankets for the sofa sleeper. We had to use towles. Overall, a rustic, not well provisioned, mildly comfortable home with a great location.
2 out of 5 stars
Manager Response:
Thank you for your review. Sorry to hear you were disappointed in the home. We are in a very rural part of California with wells and septic systems, and dishwashers & disposals are not ideal for our systems. As such, the home is not advertised as having these items so that guests are informed in advance of booking. All our homes have basic cooking amenities. There are ample "dishes, cooking utensils and an entire cooking set for food preparation. While we may not have specialty cookware, the home is well stocked for basic cooking needs. Should something be lacking, we are often able to drop something off, if we are called and informed of the need in advance. Providing food items is not something that is included in our homes. Although, there is an entire spice rack, salt & pepper, 4 bottles of oil in the cabinet. While we are not in the custom for purchasing food for guests, theses items were there. Poison oak is something that is found all over the northern California, and while I have never seen any on the property, it is not to say it couldn’t grow there. There is definitely poison oak on hiking trails and in the redwoods, and all along the whole northern coast. There are no electric fences on this property, or any fences on this property at all, for that matter. The only electric fence is on the neighbor’s property across the street, encasing their farm animals, and no one should be on their property. People generally stay in Orick to get away from technology and city life, and to visit the redwoods. The TV may not be the largest, but there is a TV and it is quite larger than a computer screen, it is 1". Overall, it sounds like this home and location were not a good fit for you for your vacation. I highly recommend a call to our reservation team for future bookings, to ensure you book a home that fits your specific needs, location, and amenities. I hope your visit to the redwoods was otherwise enjoyable. Thank you for your stay.

Review by William J.
Our family has enjoyed the outdoors for years. Our National and State Parks always forefront. Education always at the top of the list. Most spent camping but as I've aged, as have my now adult children, we've come to appreciate the vacation home rental. This is certainly not the first, nor will it be the last. This August 3 thru 8, 2018 we were blessed to have secured Rainbow's End for a visit to the Redwoods National and State Parks. I live in a very rural setting in Iowa. Rainbow's End was like stepping into my own home. Quiet, comfortable, peaceful and surrounded by beauty found no where else on Earth. The home is situated within short travel distances of everything the Parks offer. The sea, the forests, the National Park Service programs, Ranger led hikes and the Visitor Centers. I found myself in the mornings, early riser, in the company of wild turkey, a pair of golden eagles, the covey of quail, hummingbirds and the black tailed deer. The area is rich in history worth exploring. Culturally, you need go no further than Orick. I found the locals to be open and friendly. Not once was I made to feel unwelcome. Had coffee at the Palm early and learned much of the area from the proprietors. The local grocer, hardest working man in Orick, always engaging. And, without a doubt, the coolest little convenience store you will ever need. Just look for the "one" gas pump. I could go on and on. But one element puts you right where you need to be and that is the home. Rainbow's End is the perfect venue to make your adventure begin. You will not make a better choice. Everyone whose efforts made my visit so memorable deserve a heartfelt "Thank You", but a very special "Thank You" goes to the property owners for offering such a home to others. I will remember this kindness forever. Sincerely,William JacksonLee County, Iowa

Beautiful Farmhouse Retreat!

Review by David G. H.
We had a wonderful stay in this very spacious, clean and well equipped house. Watching the fog roll in and all the birds that would gather outside the kitchen window was spectacular. The kitchen had everything we needed, and we enjoyed the games and books as well! It was fantastic to be so close to the entrance to the Redwoods.

Manager Response:
The Rainbow's End is such a great house. It is very spacious and comfortable and the view is spectacular. The proximity to highway 101, makes this home a great home base for visiting the redwoods and many other scenic sites in the area. I am glad to hear this home was a good fit for you and your family and that you all enjoyed your time there.

Cute and Comfortable Stay in the Redwoods

The house was great - a very comfortable country home with a homey friendly feeling.

Manager Response:
The Rainbow's End is a charming home to stay in while visiting the Redwoods. The country feel is quite comfortable, and the house layout is quite nice. The views overlooking the pasture are very peaceful and the highway is just a short distance to go visit the neighboring towns, the redwoods, and various scenic sights. I am happy the home was a good fit for you and your family and I hope you will make it back to stay with us again.

Nice house in great, quiet location

Review by
The house was room and comfortable. It's located off the beaten path in farm country. If you follow the road to the end you come to a large beach with almost no one on it. Great place for kids to play in the sand but the river but if you go farther the surf is immense. We used this house as a base for seeing the northern redwoods. One caution. There is little in the way of grocery shopping or restaurants on this part of the coast. So bring your own food. Real shopping is in Crescent City or the Eureka area

Manager Response:
The Rainbows End is the perfect home to serve as a base for visiting the northern redwoods. I have found some interesting treasures on the beaches near there, and it is close to state parks, and many hiking trails, fishing and outdoor activities. The Palm Cafe and the Edebees Snack Shack actually do offer dining throughout the day. The Palm Cafe has a reputation for great homemade pies and the Edebees Snack Shack actually offers way more in the line of dining than just burgers. About 15-20 minutes south is the town of Trinidad which has several restaurants and quite a nice grocery store offering many organic options, a wonderful deli and a fish market. This is a really great home, set in a rural farm setting, but in such a beautiful location for enjoying our north coast.

Wonderful stay in the country

Review by
Our son and his family stayed here while we were down the street in another house. They loved it, their girls liked seeing the cows across the road. They found the house very clean and pleasant. We would absolutely recommend this house for a family who wants a vacation in the country, between the majestic sequoias and the beach. Thanks again to the managing staff who do a wonderful job.

Manager Response:
I am glad to hear you liked the house and I didn't realize you were in another home nearby. What a treat to spend time in the country with family, and still have separate accommodations to go home to. Our Orick homes are so popular, as they are just the perfect places to get away from it all. Thank you for your kind words and we hope you will all return to visit us up here in Northern California.

Relaxing, well-stocked, spacious home near redwoods and ocean

Review by
We wanted the closest large home to Redwood State Park, and were very happy with how quickly we got to the amazing trails and Fern Canyon. The kitchen was very well stocked. Each bed felt comfortable. When a minor issue came up, the management was quick and solved it, and was also kind. My children were delighted with the plethora of kid books.

Great Find in the Heart of the Redwoods. Clean. Up to Date.

Review by Lawrence S.
QUICK TAKE: Great find! We have rented vacation homes for many years and this was one of our favorites. House seems to have recently been totally updated with quality fixtures. Everything is neat and clean. The beds were more comfortable than mine at home. The kitchen is well supplied. I liked the spring water dispenser. Nice selection of boardgames and a variety of books are available. The TV room has satellite and HBO. It is set off by itself and two doors separate it from the rest of the home with remarkable sound isolation.Taken as a whole, one of our favorite vacation places. Our days here were the highlight of our Northern California vacation.OTHER DETAILS: The town of Orick is a bit run down. The only claim to fame here is proximity to the redwood forests There is a small grocery store that is no better than fair (A better store is down the road in Trinidad). There's also a diner that is as you would expect for a tiny country diner. The main advantage here is that you can get to the redwood forest to begin your hike before anybody else gets there. On one of our hikes on the Jamer Irvine Trail we arrived by eight or nine in the morning and we didn't really see any other hikers till we are on the way back at around noon. This home is located about a mile from the beach. It is a very quiet setting. We walked down to the beach -- it was about a mile each way. You can also drive there. We found lots of blackberries along the road. Word of caution here – to get to the beach you have to navigate about 20 yards through driftwood with very hazardous footing. The beach itself is stunning. No development at all. Beautiful beach. The house is set on a hill next to a cattle farm. You will occasionally hear the cows lowing. The setting is absolutely quiet. There is a nice grill in the backyard. I noticed there was a fire pit and some firewood around as well. There are not very many good reading lights. Bring a

A Wonderful Getaway!

Review by KATHRYN H.
We loved this home - and it felt like a home, with everything you could need. We stayed here for three nights while visiting the area parks. Our time in the home was as wonderful as our time on the trails and beaches. The bucolic setting is so relaxing. We enjoyed the rabbits, goldfinches, swallows, birds singing in the morning and frogs at night. We saw quail just down the road and liked the easy evening stroll to the mouth of Redwood Creek. There are comfortable beds, lots of towels and blankets, and the kitchen is very well stocked. There are many places to hang out, both inside and outside. We were pleasantly surprised to find a gas grill, which we didn't see in the description. Before you cook, watch for the pair of tree frogs that like to sit on the grill under the cover! Now, when can I go back?

Perfect redwoods getaway

Review by Ellen R.
We loved this house. So many windows. So quiet. A perfect getaway from the central valley heat wave. We particularly enjoyed the well stocked kitchen. We were able to really cook and then enjoy the view while we ate. It was a very nice stroll to the beach, but also drivable.
