Another attraction just a short distance from Main Street is the pioneer cemetery that overlooks the town. With its century old historic markers this is definitely an interesting landmark to visit. Also within easy walking distance of downtown is Russ Park, Ferndale’s bird sanctuary. This 105-acre preserve offers several miles of trails and excellent views of the Eel River Valley in which Ferndale is nestled.
Ferndale is home to many famous annual events that you can attend on your redwood forest vacation, including the Humboldt County Fair which is one of the largest. Taking place in August, this fun old fashion fair also feature popular horse racing events on the fairground’s historic racetrack. Ferndale happens to be the end point for The Kinetic Sculpture Race, a very fun and unique 3-day human powered art race. Other events hosted in Ferndale throughout the year include The Portuguese Holy Ghost Celebration, The Cinco de Mayo Folkloric Festival, and the very fun lighted tractor parade that takes place around Christmas time. In addition to all there is to do and see in Ferndale itself, the surrounding area is full of parks, beaches, and historic landmarks to explore. Beautiful Centerville Beach is only 5 miles west of Ferndale and the Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge and Avenue of the Giants lie just to the south.
