You’re bound to discover a local joint that’s slinging incredibly delicious fish tacos anytime you book a vacation on the coast of a large body of water, especially an ocean. It’s inevitable that you’ll come across a menu on California’s North Coast that features perfectly seasoned, cooked, and plated fish tacos. No two taste buds are alike, but it’s hard not to smile after you slowly bite into a slightly-crispy filet of grilled fish that is combined with medium heat, tangy slaw, and fresh vegetables. When you choose a family getaway with Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals, you’ll always be minutes away from some of the very best Northern California fish tacos.
The Best California Fish Tacos
Our team hasn’t tried every fish taco in Humboldt County, so we apologize if we’ve left off some of your local favorites. Most families, couples, and groups arrive in our beautiful slice of Northern California to spend time in the stunning Redwood National Park or on a breathtaking coastal beach, but our communities are also home to some of the best fish tacos. Our breweries aren’t half-bad either.
LoCo Fish Company
Redwood Curtain Brewing Company in Arcata has brilliantly combined two of our favorite things: craft beer and fish tacos. When this popular brewery realized they didn’t have the culinary aptitude (or a working kitchen) to serve food to their thirsty clientele, they enlisted the help of LoCo Fish Company, a local food truck. LoCo only uses fresh-caught fish from a local outfit. Their fresh rockfish tacos can be grilled, fried, or blackened. The grilled chipotle fish tacos are topped with bell peppers, onions, cabbage, pico de gallo, and spicy chipotle lime sauce, and the blackened fish is lathered in a yummy, homemade remoulade. These tacos should be paired with Redwood Curtain’s dry nitro Irish stout or a flavorful IPA.
Oaxaca Grill is located in a quiet neighborhood on the southern end of Eureka. Most people would cruise on past this unassuming dive, but that would be a huge mistake! This quaint Mexican restaurant is one of the only establishments in Humboldt County to use mango slaw. While Oaxaca Grill could use new floors, furniture, and decor, they’re still cooking up the best Mexican food in Eureka. The fish tacos come in three different varieties: jicama slaw, avocado pico, or mango salsa. We recommend the latter!
SALT Fish House
SALT Fish House sometimes gets a bad rap because of their small portions, high prices, and occasionally long wait times, but their modern, elegant decor, knowledgeable waitstaff, and sensational menu are too good to pass up. They also happen to cook some of the best California fish tacos. SALT grills their local fish and tops it with fresh cabbage, radish, pepitas, and chipotle crème fraÎche. SALT is located in downtown Arcata, making it a popular lunch, happy hour, and dinner option for locals and tourists alike.
Humboldt Bay Bistro
Fresh off the heels of being named Humboldt County’s Best New Restaurant of 2017, Humboldt Bay Bistro is winning over hungry patrons one-by-one with their French-Californian fusion cuisine. Not only is Humboldt Bay Bistro serving delicious homestyle French cooking in a historic home overlooking the Pacific Ocean, but they also whip up some of the best Calfornia fish tacos. The tempura-battered fish tacos are combined with fresh cabbage, pico de gallo, and wasabi crème fraÎche (which adds a clever kick!). Their prawn tacos are also a must-try! Humboldt Bay Bistro is hands-down one of the best restaurants in Eureka, CA.
Six Rivers Brewery
We’re not done yet! Six Rivers Brewery in McKinleyville, CA, is not only slinging some of the best craft beer in Humboldt County, but their talented, creative kitchen staff has been whipping up tasty fish tacos for years. We’re a little biased here at Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals because Six Rivers is one block away from our main office. Stop for the roasty porters, tart sours, and hoppy IPAs, and stay for the delicious “Big Island Tacos.” These tasty concoctions have grilled or beer-battered Pacific cod (they’re both fantastic!), cabbage, a three cheese blend, and Baja sauce.
Places to Stay on the North Coast
Choosing a vacation rental for your Redwoods getaway can be challenging, but not if you’re looking for a three-bedroom house in downtown Arcata, CA. Arcata Views is a new construction with three elegant bedrooms, a private outdoor seating area, and fully-equipped kitchen. The best part of this lovely vacation home is that it’s one block from SALT Fish House’s delicious chipotle tacos!
Cozy Craftsman’s Cottage
Tucked away, two miles south of lively Old Town Eureka, is the Cozy Craftsman’s Cottage, a two-bedroom, single-family home with tons of rustic charm. This cottage combines old-warm charm and contemporary style only 0.8 miles north of Oaxaca Grill. You’ll fall in love the ivy-covered backyard, clawfoot tub, and wooden ceilings.
The historic Campton House is a three-bedroom gem in the Old Town Eureka district. This magical home sleeps nine with the calming allure of a bed and breakfast. Each step inside the Campton House tells another story. This beautiful home is only a six-minute walk from the tempura battered fish tacos at Humboldt Bay Bistro, which is a bonus.
