Nothing quite tops a glass of fine wine after a full day of exploration inside Northern California’s glorious Redwood National and State Parks. And while the North Coast isn’t widely considered “Wine Country” to many outsiders, some of the best wineries in Northern California rest in the lively seaside communities of Trinidad, Eureka, and Arcata. The perfect place to start and finish each day of adventure, photography, and beachcombing is inside one of our oceanfront Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals—we have gorgeous, affordable vacation homes all along the North Coast.

Wineries in Northern California

The Top 4 Wineries in Northern California

While there aren’t hundreds of wineries in Northern California like there is in Napa and Sonoma, the idyllic soil and weather here along the North Coast still produces top-level grapevines. Yes, this beautiful region is known for its towering coniferous trees, gnarly waves, and refreshing craft beer, but don’t overlook Humboldt County’s flourishing vino scene. Most of the wineries in Northern California are small, unpretentious, and led by undeniably talented vintners. Without further ado, let’s start this list with a Redwood Coast mainstay: Moonstone Crossing Winery.

Moonstone Crossing Winery

Location: 529 Trinity Street, Trinidad, CA
Hours: 12–6 p.m. daily (June through December) / winter hours
Must try: The Temptation of Angels, Souzao Port, Viognier
Why choose Moonstone Crossing? If you have a persistent desire to savor award-winning vino, then we highly recommend Moonstone Crossing Winery in Trinidad, a seaside city that’s well known for pristine Moonstone Beach. Vintners Don Bremm and Sharon Hanks have been crafting an eclectic mix of wine labels for over a decade, garnering high praise, accolades, and gold medals along the way. Their modest tasting room has a surprisingly massive list of varietals, including rosé, port, and pinot noir.

Old Growth Cellars

Wineries in Northern CaliforniaLocation: 1945 Hilfiker Lane, Eureka, CA
Hours: 1–7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday
Must try: Petite Sirah, Sauvignon Blanc, O.G. Experience
Why choose Old Growth? If you’re aiming to enjoy an authentic wine cellar experience, look no further than Eureka’s Old Growth Cellars. Old Growth is one of the newest wineries in Northern California, and their tasting room is sparkling, sleek, and inviting. This popular meeting and wedding venue can fit up to 220 people, but the 45-person tasting room is where you’ll likely spend your afternoon. They specialize in small batches of wine, made with locally-grown Humboldt County grapes. A visual treat inside their bright tasting room is the eye-popping old-growth redwood countertop. If you have a medium or large group, feel free to call ahead about a private tasting!

North Story Wines

Location: 1350 9th Street, Arcata, CA
Hours: 3–6 p.m. Friday / 1–6 p.m. Saturday
Must try: Vermentino, Pinot Noir, Carignane
Why choose North Story? North Story Wines is quite unique as this venture began (and remains) primarily as a cidery. Humboldt County’s Orignal Wrangletown Hard Cider specializes in dry, farmhouse-style ciders, all of which are concocted in our beautiful county. Having worked in Napa and Sonoma, owner Pat Knittel naturally began to put her time spent with pinot noir consultants and master sommeliers to good use. Both of Knittel’s Arcata ventures have been met with wild success amongst locals and travelers alike. North Story will often host events in the summertime, such as live music, comedians, food trucks, and the ever-popular Hard Cider Festival.

Humboldt Honey Wine

Location: 723 3rd Street, Eureka, CA
Hours: 3–8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday
Must try: Blackberry Cobbler, Classic Dry, Feisty
Why choose Humboldt Honey? Humboldt Honey Wine is among the most underrated wineries near Redwood National Park thanks to their home-raised honey bees. Their mead (or honey wine) is crafted using traditional Scottish practices—the end result is a sweet, well-balanced journey that your tastebuds won’t soon forget. Humboldt Honey claims they craft “the nectar of the gods,” which you can gleefully sample inside their cute tasting room on Third Street in Eureka.
