As spring subtly shifts to summer along California’s North Coast, we welcome thousands of families, couples, and groups to glorious Redwood National Park. While there’s never an offseason for hiking, kayaking, and surfing here at Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals, many travelers choose the summertime for their meticulously-planned Redwoods escape because of the lush forestry, rising temperatures, and warm Pacific Ocean water. It’s challenging to pack all of the best things to do in Trinidad CA into just one day, but it’s been done many times by several savvy tourists aiming to spend time in several sections of the Redwoods along the North Coast.

8:20 a.m. – Pack a picnic
To save a little money, we recommend packing a light picnic. There will be several mid-day picnic opportunities during your adventures through the awe-inspiring Redwood National Park. It’s hard to top smoked turkey sandwiches, Sun Chips, crisp vegetables, and a sports drink on a warm summer day!
9:30 a.m. – Fern Canyon
No Redwood Forest vacation is complete without a stop at Fern Canyon, one of our favorite hidden gems along the North Coast. This jaw-dropping canyon is highlighted by 80-foot-tall verticle walls which are covered in five types of ferns as well as moss and various plants. We cannot think of a better way to start your well-deserved North Coast vacation!
11:20 a.m. – Cathedral Trees Trail
You don’t want to return to your ocean-view Trinidad CA lodging without spending several hours deep inside the Redwood Forest. Cathedral Trees Trail is one of our five favorite hiking trails in Northern California. Only shrewd travelers know about this well-kept secret. You’ll meander underneath gigantic redwoods and pass by wild mushrooms, ferns, colorful slugs, and perhaps roaming elk!

Find a quiet, scenic spot along Cathedral Trees Trail to enjoy your picnic.
2 p.m. – Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail
The last stop inside the Redwood Forest is the easy yet utterly-stunning Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail northeast of Orick CA. Many of the nation’s tallest trees lie inside this popular grove, so don’t forget your camera.
3:15 p.m. – Trinidad State Beach / College Cove
Easily one of the most popular things to do in Trinidad CA is a stroll along the tranquil shores at Trinidad State Beach, home to stunning College Cove. This breathtaking beach is often utilized for dog walking, sunbathing, photography, and occasionally surfing along the southernmost stretch where the waves intensify. If you have time, feel free to hike along the bluffs for jaw-dropping vistas of College Cove and the Pacific Ocean.
5:45 p.m. – Dinner at The Larrupin’ Café
After freshening up and dressing for dinner, drive two miles north to The Larrupin’ Café on Patricks Point Drive. The Larrupin’ Café is a top-reviewed, fine-dining steakhouse with an extensive wine list, eclectic decor, and romantic allure. Their diverse menu features grass-fed venison, Angus filet mignon, and mesquite fish of the day. Starting the meal with creole prawns is a wise choice!
7:30 p.m. – Six Rivers Brewery
One of the highlights along the Northern California Beer Trail is Six Rivers Brewery in nearby Arcata CA. This trendy brewpub is only 500 feet from Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals’ headquarters, so we’ve tried just about every beer they’ve produced. You never know what’s going to be on tap, but two of their staples, Rosie’s Strawberry Wheat and the Macadamia Nut Porter, are worth the trip south.
8:45 p.m. – Pacific Ocean sunset
Cap off this unforgettable day with a heart-melting Pacific Ocean sunset from either the comfort of one of our private beachfront rentals or Trinidad Head.
9:30 – Late-night options
All of our Trinidad CA vacation rentals are unique – some have hot tubs while others feature fire pits. If you still have a little gas in the tank, we recommend soaking in a hot tub, roasting marshmallows, cozying up next to a fireplace, or venturing to Cher-Ae Heights Casino for a little late-night entertainment. Cher-Ae Heights has quickly become one of the most popular things to do in Trinidad CA after dark.
