From Green to Yellow
Spring and summer bring a vibrancy of lush, greenery to the Northern California coast. Whether it’s deep in the forest, high above the canopy, or along the walls of Fern Canyon, autumn makes the bright chartreuse and gorgeous viridescent shift to a stunning kaleidoscope of wonderful warm browns, rich purples, and vivacious reds, oranges, and yellows. One of the best times of year to experience this immaculate change is during the harvest season. With California having one of the longest and most diverse fall colors than anywhere else you’ll be surprised to find that at any point during autumn, you can come across a wide array of fall foliage.
While some might assume that the East Coast is where you should be for the fall foliage, truly everywhere along the Northern latitude has the chance to make a memorable impression. The difference in California is that as the elevation drops the colors begin to turn, which means you’ll be able to experience beautiful colors from September through November. The best part is that if you miss peak season on the east, all you have to do is just drive to a lower elevation for you to experience peak season on the west.
According to California Fall Color, right now, the Northern Coast hasn’t begun the transformation into fall, but that means it’s a perfect time to book your redwood forest vacation to ensure you’re here during that peak foliage time! An Autumn Prairie
Located right in the thick of North Humboldt County you’ll find the Redwood Scenic Parkway; this sweet route will take you through Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. From Trinidad, head north on Hwy 101 towards Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway, which happens to be the scenic Hwy 101, loop around to Hwy 101 again and head south back to Trinidad. This hour-long trip is perfect for a day trip. We recommend stopping at Larrupin Cafe in Trinidad for a delicious dinner for two. Try out their carpaccio for an appetizer, the thinly sliced tenderloin will melt in your mouth and their Cornish game hen for an entree, which is blackened and served with a lovely orange brandy glaze. Take a look at their menu for even more tantalizing options.
A Harvest Fern
If you want to spend some more time in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, opt to take the Davidson Road exit from Hwy 101, right around Berry Glenn and head north along the coast to Fern Canyon. You’ll head off the paved road for six miles on this path until you reach Gold Bluffs Beach, pack a picnic lunch and spend some time on the beach before hopping back in the car and continuing for an additional 3 miles. Once you reach the parking lot at the end, you’ll begin your journey to Fern Canyon, which is deep in the redwood forest. Before heading home, head north to Klamath, and dine at the Historic Requa Inn. Serving up family-style meals, you’ll able to fuel up after your trip through Fern Canyon before heading south on Hwy 101 back to your redwood forest vacation rental.
A Fall Giant
Looking at seeing the giant redwoods, which have been calling your name? Head out on the beautiful Avenue of the Giants scenic tour for an unforgettable day trip. A must for anyone wanting to see the massive redwood trees. In South Humboldt County you’ll find this route on the southern portion of Hwy 101 which will put you directly through Humboldt Redwood State Park. You’ll want to make sure you park your car and explore the hiking and biking trails throughout the area. During the fall, even a change in elevation can have a significant change in autumn colors. For a bite before heading back to the coast, try the Avenue Cafe, located in Miranda, CA. Right by the Avenue of the Giants this quaint restaurant is known for their calzones and delicious pizza.
