HSU Marine Lab
One of the coolest places to bring your family is the Humboldt State University Telonicher Marine Laboratory. This lab provides a center for the study of marine and environmental sciences for those along the coast of California. You’ll love that anyone, even students, can learn about information of the rocky shores, sandy beaches, and tide pools. The Marine Lab offers summer programs for residents and visitors. If the whole family wants to join in your adventure, the Lab is open to the public throughout the week. You can explore with a self-guided tour of the facilities which include view tanks and touch tanks. Junior Rangers & Educational Programs
The Redwood National Park’s offer excellent educational and Junior Ranger programs for kids! Your kiddos will want to stop at one of the Information Center’s to get their Junior Ranger Activity Book. You can complete these activities with the whole family, and when you’re done, you’ll get a badge! Beyond the self-guided programs that the Park’s offer, there are also Ranger Guided tours to try. Whether it’s crafts and games, or hiking and exploring, your children will love these Junior Ranger activities. Plus, a big draw for these types of family opportunities, is that you can continue the fun throughout the United States at 70 additional parks around the country.
Much like the Junior Ranger programs, Redwood Ed-Venture Quests is a fun alternative to a simple hike through the forests. These quests take up to an hour, but they are a fun and interactive way of hiking and learning about the area. At the nearest Visitor Center, you can ask for a quest or you can download the quest you want to use before your trip. Following the directions will let you get to know more about the trees and the surrounding ecosystem. In the end, you’ll have to answer a clue, take that back to the Information Center and use your key (clue) to receive a badge! This family activity will get everyone thinking and learn new information about our park systems!
